Emergency Kit Contents
Throughout my life I have spent countless weeks in the mountains backpacking, and among other things, it has taught me how to survive on very little for days at a time. As a 12 year old Boy Scout, I hiked the Low Divide Trail (The Press Trail) down through the heart of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State, and as I recall I was carrying close to 50 lbs. This is remarkable considering I weighed less than 100 lbs. In the years since I've been able to reduce the weight of my pack to less than 20 lbs., for a five day trip and survive just fine.
Preparing for a disaster has many similarities to preparing for a hike, and the items needed can be broken down into eight areas of emergency preparedness. Here is Emergency Preparedness Northwest's list. We carry all of these items, so please see our product list on our website for details.
- Water: One gallon a day, and a survival straw or filtration bottle

- Emergency food rations: 1200 calories a day
- Light: green 12-hour light stick, 10-hour emergency candle, 36-hour survival candle, waterproof matches and rechargeable flashlight or lantern
- Heat: hand warmers, emergency bag, a blanket and extra clothing.
- Shelter: rain/emergency poncho, tube tent
- First aid kit,and know how to use it)
- Communications: plastic whistle, acrylic signal mirror and dynamo AM/FM radio
- Sanitation: biodegradable soap, toilet paper, Restop 1 & Restop 2 (disposable travel toilets)
Keep these items in a water-resistant bag.
Additional Items: These can be kept in a group or family kit

- Leather work gloves
- face masks
- plastic trowel
- pocket knife
- tarp
- duct tape
- small saw
- shovel
- flares
- pen and paper

The most important thing is to put a kit together today, or better yet, buy one of ours and then you're done and you don't have to worry any more. It's part of our selling "peace of mind." Of course I'd love to sell you a kit, but we also want you, your family and employees prepared. I have talked with so many people over the years on being ready for a disaster, but unfortunately, most of those who say "I need to get ready," haven't and when I talk with them a year later, they still don't have a kit. Call us at 360-698-3678 and let us help you take the first step.
